Different concept related maps are discussed namely maps,types of Maps,Atlas, components of maps including distance, direction and symbol,sketch and plan .
Map
A map is a representation or a drawing of the earth’s surface or a part of it drawn on a flat surface according to a scale.
Differences between Maps and globe
•Maps provide more information than the globe
•Maps are of various types based on the specific purposes while globe represents all the earth surface at the same time.
•Maps are represented on the flat surface while globe represents earth in its circular shape .
Atlas
Atlas is a collection of different maps based on different & specific themes in a single book .These are of various sizes and measurements drawn on different scales.
Types of Maps
1.Physical Maps
These maps shows natural features of the earth, such as mountains, plateaus, plains, rivers, oceans etc., are called physical or relief maps.
Political Maps
These Maps shows cities, towns and villages, and different countries and states of the world with their boundaries are called political maps.
Thematic Maps
Those maps that focus on specific information; such as road maps, rainfall maps, and maps showing the distribution of forests, industries etc., are known as thematic maps.

Distance
Maps are sheets of paper on which whole world is drawn at reduced scales and reduction is done to make it real.It can be possible by using scales to represent large distance on small paper.
Scale
Scale is the ratio between the actual distance on the ground and distance on the map.Like 1 Cm on map shows 10 Km actual distance.
Types of scale
Small Scale map
When large areas like continents or countries are shown ,we use small scale like 5 cm on map shows 500 Km of the ground.It is known as small scale map.
Large scale map
When a small area like town or village is shown on the paper we use large scale like 4 cm shows 400 metres actual distance .It is known as large scale map.
Direction
There are four major directions , North, South, East and West and they are called cardinal points.
Intermediate directions– North-east, South-east, South-west and North-west.
We locate any place more accurately with the help of these intermediate directions.We can find direction of a place by using compass.
Compass
Compass is an instrument to find directions with the help of magnetic needle that always points towards north-south direction .
Symbols
When different things like school,roads, railway station and bridges etc are shown by using certain letters,shades, colours, pictures and lines.These are called symbols .
Advantages of Symbols
•Symbols give a lot of information in a limited space.
•Maps can be drawn easily and are easy to read and understand.
•This universal language of symbols can be understand by all whether educated or not.
There is an International agreement regarding the use of these symbols . These are called conventional symbols.

•Blue- water bodies
•Brown – mountains
•Yellow – plateau
•Green – Plains
Sketch
A sketch is a roughly drawing based on memory and spot observation and not to scale.It is required of an area to tell where a particular place is located with respect to other places.
Plan
A plan is a drawing of a small area on a large scale which give a lot of information.
